The overall aim of the new General Data Protection Regulation is to harmonise the various current data protection laws in place across the EU members and to clarify and extend some of the provisions already in place. It relates to all EU members and potentially affects every organisation that processes the personal information of EU residents even if they themselves are not within Europe.
